The Victoria Park Gateway, opened in the summer of
2008, succeeded in connecting two City of Kitchener
landmarks. The design is context sensitive and response to
the romantic style and heritage of Victoria Park as well as
integrating the existing Old City Hall Clock Tower now
located in the Park. GSP Group created a streetscape and
new gateway to the park that establishes a strong axis
between the City of Kitchener’s City Hall and Victoria Park,
an early 20th century park design. The enhancement of the
axis between two iconic Kitchener landmarks reinforces the
connection between the City’s past and future.
The
park design evolved from a Master Plan study prepared by GSP
Group and was refined through community involvement. Public
input was the spirit of this project and shaped the final
design. The park has been very well received by the
community and many residents spend time socializing and
relaxing within the new gateway area.
The entrance to the Park is through the lit stone
faced pillars, sign wall, and paved plaza. Two pathways
lead around an open green with extensive themed planting
beds. Approaching the clock tower, two naturalized water
features, with cascading waterfall break on either side.
Public art is integrated into the landscape throughout.
Victoria Park is being recognized for innovation in
design by the Unilock Awards Program 2009.
