GSP Group led a multi-disciplinary team to develop streetscape guidelines and implementation strategy to update 30-year-old guidelines for the downtown. Using hand-held GPS units, GSP Group reviewed and updated the existing inventory of streetscape elements made up of a mix of styles and materials based on past design standards. The data was integrated for the City’s Open Data Catalogue in an effort to identify gaps in the existing streetscape palette.
GSP Group prepared a consultation program of community engagement sessions and online feedback. Updated streetscape treatments, such as lighting, paving and furnishings complement high pedestrian use and the vibrancy of the downtown. Public realm improvements consider a rationalization of furniture elements to create a unified palette. Treatments, including street trees and vegetation respond to Burlington as a modern city centre.
The plan also takes into consideration opportunities to preserve and enhance Burlington’s existing identity, including well-kept public and private spaces, reflection of the existing heritage character, and a sociable and comfortable environment.
