The City of Kitchener retained GSP Group to lead the preparation of a master plan for the Gaukel / Young Street corridor.  Seeking to transform the Downtown corridor into a new esplanade linking Victoria Park, City Hall and Hibner Park, the Master Plan provided a framework to guide the preparation of detailed streetscape plans and redevelopment of various blocks along the corridor. The Master Plan recommended a new plaza and redefined entrance to Victoria Park, a realignment of Joseph Street, enhancement of pedestrian crosswalks and sidewalks, and the addition of pedestrian-scale lighting, entry gateway features, outdoor public plazas, and integrative public art.

Implementing the master plan, GSP Group was also retained by the City to prepare the detailed streetscape plan for Gaukel Street between City Hall and Victoria Park.  The streetscape plan addressed many challenges presented by the adjacent bus terminal, restaurants, housing, retail and office uses.  The streetscape design included reconfiguring pavement widths, providing a pedestrian route along the bus terminal, and adding streetscape elements including new trees and furnishings, decorative pavements, unique lighting standards, and a water feature and sitting area at Charles Street.
