The Township of West Lincoln retained GSP Group to prepare the Smithville Trails and Corridors Master Plan. This community-wide vision for trails and corridors would keep with local, regional and provincial policies, promote active transportation options and a healthy community. A major impetus for the master plan was the need to respond to pedestrian safety concerns expressed by the students at Smithville Christian High School, who were inspired to create a more walkable community and provide easier and safer access to the Leisureplex sports complex and other destinations,

GSP Group led an extensive public consultation process with stakeholder workshops and interviews to raise awareness about the master plan and to gather input about opportunities and challenges to building an interconnected on- and off-road corridor system. GSP Group conducted a thorough inventory and assessment of existing infrastructure and offered recommendations for planning and developing an expanded network. Recommendations included a clearly defined trail and corridor hierarchy, detailed construction standards, phasing policies and associated costs. GSP Group also advised on issues such as funding opportunities and forming partnerships with landowners to increase access to land for a continuous trail and on-road system.
