Oakville Arena and Trafalgar Park Revitalization

/ Landscape Architecture

GSP Group was part of an Integrated Project Delivery team revitalizing Oakville Trafalgar Park to achieve a minimum LEED Silver certification. The park includes a new fire hall, expansion of the existing community centre, new communal courtyard, playground areas and retrofit of the tennis courts into a multi-use sport court that converts to an outdoor rink during the winter months.

GSP Group led site inventory and analysis to determine parking and park space elements to improve how the space functions. Slopes, wayfinding measures, furnishings and playground elements support barrier-free access and safety. Walkways through the site blend into existing connection routes and encourage open sight lines and visibility for pedestrians in the park and parking areas.

The landscape design and restoration of the site made great efforts toward tree preservation as pathways and programmed areas were located to integrate existing natural features and frame open lawn areas. Landscaping was coordinated with Town staff to ensure that plantings for the site supported low-maintenance efforts for long-term upkeep and exceeded canopy requirement standards as tree plantings mature. A bio-retention swale with below-grade soil cells for expanded soil provisions and stormwater collection support tree plantings within the parking lot.
