University of Waterloo Village 1 Residences

/ Landscape Architecture

GSP Group provided Landscape Architecture services for the design of the outdoor spaces at the University of Waterloo’s Village 1 (V1) Residence, including the North and West courtyards, the main entrance to V1 from Ring Road, as well as the pedestrian link extending east from V1 along the University Club towards the Physical Activities Complex (PAC) building.

The intent of the open space design was to enhance the sense of place for the courtyards and approach to the V1 building for both residents and visitors alike. Ensuring barrier-free access through the spaces to promote inclusiveness for all pedestrians was imperative, as well as increasing sustainability through tree protection. GSP Group also considered opportunities to integrate native plantings as well as durable and easily maintainable plantings, surface materials and furnishings to ease long-term maintenance for university staff.
